Tests to avoid a BT Openreach call out charge

First, unplug all equipment including any broadband microfilters from ALL the phone sockets in the house.

Plug a phone which you are 100% certain is working, into the BT MASTER SOCKET. The BT master socket is generally located near the front door or near a window. The plastic socket often has BT written on the front of it and is where the telephone wires enter a property.

If the fault persists, unscrew the face plate of the BT master socket, and plug your phone into the BT test socket. The test socket should be located behind the face plate as shown in the picture on the left.

Email us with exact details of any fault once you have carried out the test above. Is it intermittent or continuous? Does the phone ring when you have an incoming call? Is there a dialling tone? Can you make outgoing calls? Describe any noise on the line - eg a crackle, a hiss, a hum etc? Did the fault occur after heavy rain or snow? Are there any lines down? Are there roadworks going on?
