Linksys Wireless G WVC54G web camera with Mac OS X Tiger 10.4
The new Linksys Wireless G WVC54G web camera retails at approx £140 from PC World or costs £70-£80 2nd hand on eBay. A good feature of this camera is that it does not have to be connected to a computer in order to transmit images over the internet. The camera has its own built in webserver and only requires a wireless modem router in order to transmit images. Although the camera says it does not work with MAC OS X, it is possible to view video using Virtual PC 7 or mPlayer. (See http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16623)
The following pages show how to set up the camera wirelessly and view live video with sound over the internet. In this example the Linksys wireless web camera is configured using a Netgear DG834GT 108 Mbps wireless ADSL router in conjunction with Zen Internet who provide free static IP address as standard.
